Introducing Canberra Chiropractor Dr Andrew Norwood

“I was told it was just a normal part of growing up. I had constant lower back pain, pain that radiated into my legs and shins splints. The physio had given me exercises, the doctor pain killers and it made little difference. They called it growing pains. Then I had my first chiropractic adjustment and my life changed.”

Twenty years ago I was a normal 16 year old kid, but I developed extreme lower back pain. In my case it came on gradually. The pain initially just niggled, not something that would disturb me every moment. However, if I tried to play hockey or tennis I would be bedridden the next day. Over the next two years it increased until it became the norm that I had pain. It even began to affect me so intensely that I couldn’t sit and it started to affect my school work. My Doctor said it was “a phase I was going through”. Finally, my dad suggested that I give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor did an exam, took some films, and then “adjusted” my spine. The results were so life changing that I went to chiropractic school myself.”

My chiropractic education started at Sydney University with and Undergraduate degree in Anatomy and Physiology. However this was not enough to cover all the essential topics needed to complete my chiropractic education. I also studied at the University of N.S.W., Macquarie University and Sydney college of Chiropractic and Osteopathy. These courses I studied were very similar to a medical degree; I even had medical students in my lectures. However I didn’t have to all the same topics such as surgery or pharmacology, that time was spent on neurology, the spine, radiology, and chiropractic techniques. I graduated from Macquarie University with a Masters Degree in Chiropractic in 1993 and moved back to my home town of Canberra where I set up my clinic Chiro Healthworks in 1995. I completed a diploma of nutritional medicine in 1999 and since then I have continued my education with the focus to enhance my skills to assist the community of Canberra achieve their health goals.

My goal at Chiro Healthworks is to check, educate and adjust as many families to peak health. The key part I think is education. The more you know and understand how your body works, the easier it is to take care of it. This means less sick days and less visits to the doctor. Our team pride ourselves on our level of patient care and the service we provide. People of all ages, with many degrees of injury have obtained full recovery with our non invasive holistic approach to health care. The most fulfilling aspect of our practice is watching our patients transform into a wellness lifestyle!

When I am not in the office I enjoy spending time with family. I am a keen tennis player and can be seen on courts all over Canberra in any competition I can get. I love to ski; I am an avid reader and love to see movies. I believe in leading by example so I have weekly chiropractic adjustments, as well as regular workouts, good nutrition and lots of fun, all to help maintain optimum health.

Dr Andrew Asks some important questions of interest to Canberra residents - Chiropractor Canberra Dr Andrew Asks...

Where do most Canberra residents get their first subluxation?
Being born in a hospital is a common source of subluxation. Trauma from forceps delivery has been replaced with drugs, vacuum extraction, Cesarean section and births that are "scheduled" to fit the workweek routines of Ob-Gyns. That's why we recommend a chiropractic checkup for every Canberra newborn.
Is a muscle spasm a cause or an effect?
With the knee-jerk use of muscle relaxers, you'd think it was a cause. But it's an effect. Chiropractors know that bones don't move unless muscles move them. And muscles don't contract unless commanded by the nervous system. That's why your nervous system is the focus of our Canberra chiropractic practice.
